The average consumer throws away approximately 800 deodorant bottles in their lifetime. Switch Fresh has patented a new style of deodorant packaging to solve this problem. It is the first sustainable, personalised deodorant and claims to reduce plastic waste by 96% compared to traditional bottles.
The design features a gliding mechanism on the side of the “shuttle”, rather than the regular twist one. This frees up almost half the space in the container to hold more product. The Switch Fresh design can hold one 5 ounce deodorant cartridge, or two 2.5 ounce cartridges accessed from both sides of the shuttle, which can be removed and replaced as needed. This allows the outer shuttle to be reused over and over again, reducing the amount of plastic waste that ends up in landfills each year.
The shuttle can be customised by the consumer with different colours and designs. Switch Fresh also plans to offer a range of deodorant formulations, from a “natural, chemical free” version to a hard-working antiperspirant. Consumers will have a choice of scents such as vanilla, sandalwood, jasmine, patchouli and grapefruit.
Although the idea has been in the works since 2012 and the package design is already patented, Switch Fresh still requires funding to bring the project to the first round of production. Despite not yet being at production stage, the product is forecast to be a success. The main factors for this prediction are the design’s capitalisation of the customisable personal care products trend and addressing the issue of post-consumer waste while retaining the look and feel that is familiar to customers.
