Health Canada is now requiring formal substantiation that the active ingredients in SPF products and other simple drugs meet acceptable quality standards. This is a new requirement that stems from the classification of these products as “drugs” as opposed to cosmetics.
This of course is a very important matter when you think about prescription drugs. The active ingredients in these products are imported from all around the world and it is critical that they are manufactured under strict GMP conditions. Simple drugs have been swept up into this requirement, although somewhat simplified from prescription drugs. However, this speaks to the urgent need for reclassification of simple drugs as either cosmetics, or they could be given the same considerations as Natural Health Products, which do not require this kind of quality requirement.
