Proposed Revisions to Echinacea Monographs

The Natural Health Products Directorate (NHPD) is seeking feedback on three revised monographs for Echinacea angustifolia, Echinacea pallida and Echinacea purpurea. The most significant revisions have been made to ‘Dose(s)’. In Echinacea pallida minimum dosage has been reduced for all age groups. The ‘Source Material’ for Echinacea purpurea has been changed to include herb top. Dosage for Echinacea purpurea will now be different for material sourced from root, herb top or the combination of herb top and root. Other changes to the Echinacea purpurea monograph include the requirement for risk information under ‘Known Adverse Reaction(s)’ cautioning against use of Echinacea purpurea in children under 12 years of age due to observations of rare cases of severe allergic reactions.
