The Crisis in Cosmetic Consulting: Ingredient Bans

The Crisis in Cosmetic Consulting: Ingredient Bans

In late February, our president Rob Ross-Fichtner spoke at the Society of Cosmetic Chemists dinner conference in Montreal, Quebec on the “Crisis in Cosmetics: Surviving the Endless Bans of Ingredients”.  As a cosmetic consultant for Canadian, American and global companies, Rob’s talk brought up the important questions associated with how cosmetic scientists used to be entrusted to formulate products that were safe for the public and the environment alike.  However, formulation decisions have become the responsibility of governments, NGOs and private citizens.  He brought up the issues that come with the growth of social media and how many “experts” now weigh in on what should and should not be found within cosmetics.  Even ingredients that are deemed fine by regulators and scientific experts may be viewed as unsafe to the public.

This stimulated discussion regarding the California Safe Cosmetics Act, the Environmental Working Group and other organizations and public bodies that are influencing the cosmetic industry.  Important changes are taking place among regulators and legislators as a result.  The discussion focused on the need for sound science and the proper risk management approach for the cosmetic industry.

Mr. Ross-Fichtner discussed the issues that cosmetic formulators of the future will have to deal with when trying to come up with new product ideas.  How do we as a society create global harmonization with regards to regulations of ingredients to further the advancement of these products?  Topics were chosen in regards to ingredient bans, formulation options to cope with them, and what we as an industry must do to protect our science, maintain access to critical ingredients, and finally, sustain and grow the confidence of our consumers.

Product manufacturers entering the cosmetic market must pay close attention to the different regulations for their ingredients in order to expedite products to market without unnecessary delays and adverse publicity.  Rob Ross-Fichtner and the Focal Point Research Inc. team have been successful in this industry because we combine both scientific and regulatory knowledge into our practice.  We are the Cosmetic Consultants that you should trust to be knowledgeable and honest about your product.
