Government of Canada Urges Voluntary Reduction of Triclosan

If your company uses triclosan in any products, here are some developments you need to know about:

The Government of Canada wants to reduce the amount of triclosan released into the environment. Triclosan is an antimicrobial chemical that is found in products including soaps, deodorants, toothpastes, and mouthwashes. No immediate changes are required for triclosan in personal care products, cosmetics, non-prescription drugs, and natural health products following the Government of Canada’s preliminary assessment of triclosan’s safety for human health and the environment.

 What to Do:

  1. Prepare for Government consultations with industry to assess the potential for voluntary reductions in triclosan.
  2. Consider substituting triclosan with other ingredients that provide equivalent benefits with less risk to the environment.
  3. Minimize the quantity of triclosan in your products.
