Health Canada is in the process of reviewing the requirements for topical consumer health products like sunscreens and acne products.  The intention is to simplify the requirements and make their regulation more appropriate to the low risk they pose.  This will likely be a multi-year process but recent information suggests that they will be examining sunscreens separately as these products are such an enormous issue to the cosmetics industry.  The industry wants Health Canada to focus on redefining the appropriate level of Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs) for these products rather than the severe requirement for pharmaceutical GMP’s.  We also will be asking Health Canada to reconsider the requirements for testing and quarantine for these products as they enter Canada.  The industry is putting forward formal proposals to Health Canada regarding these two important issues and believes the Department is open to considering changes, hopefully in the short term.

We hope that this information is helpful to you and your company.  If you have any questions about requirements or repercussions to your products feel free to contact Focal Point Research, cosmetic consultants for over 25 years in North America.
